My name is Dr. Mudd, and I am an Assistant Professor of Speech and Drama at Temple College. This is the home page for all of my courses.

Dr. Derek Mudd PhD in Communication Studies and an MFA in Theatre from Louisiana State University. His dissertation, “Staging the Voice: Towards a Critical Vocal Performance Pedagogy,” surveys 19th and 20th Century vocal training techniques for actors to apply those techniques to speakers on and off the stage. His essay about identity and actor training is anthologized in the collection The Politics of American Actor Training, and he has presented research at national and regional conferences. As a performer, Dr. Mudd is known for his work on new plays and musicals and originated the role of Tido von Shon Angerer in the world premiere of Cocktail by Ping Chong. Most recently, Dr. Mudd served as Program Administrator at the Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA), where he was staff specialist for theatre and dance, arts education, and professional development. At TCA, Dr. Mudd produced a popular webinar series to deliver virtual professional development opportunities for arts administrators in Texas. Previous to that, he was the course director for Public Speaking at Southeastern Louisiana University. Dr. Mudd has taught a wide range of acting, theatre, and speech communication classes both inside and outside of the college/university setting.

I will hold office hours so that students can meet with me outside of class. Preferred Communication

Like most peopls these days, I am always online, so email is the quickest way to reach me. If you email me before 4:00 p.m. Mon.-Thu., I will try to respond the same day. If you email me Mon.-Thu after 4:00 p.m., I will try to respond within 24 hours. Please know that it may take me longer to get back to you over the weekend or during a holiday. If I haven't responded within 48 hours, it usually means that I did not receive your message, so please email me again.

Preferred Name & Pronouns

I prefer that you call me Dr. Mudd or Professor Mudd, and I use he/him pronouns. Please feel free to share your preferred name and pronouns with me.

Preferred Language

I primarily speak English, but I love languages and have studied Spanish, French, and German. However, I don’t speak any of these well enough to grade work in any language other than English. If you speak Spanish, French, or German, I am happy to exchange a few phrases with you. If you speak any other language and want to teach me a few words, I am a happy to learn.
